Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)
The Campbellsport Fire Department R.I.T. team will consist of qualified members from the fire department whose sole purpose is quick deployment to a firefighter in distress. Any member will be eligible and is encouraged to be part of the R.I.T. team. All interested personnel must qualify to be part of the team. To qualify you must be able to and will be required to perform various fire fighting tasks. You must be knowledgeable on certain things. Remember in a situation that would require the need of the R.I.T. team the fire ground situation would be an ugly, hectic, and stressful event. We have trained these men and women to be ready for deployment at the moment the MAYDAY goes out by ensuring that they are in full personal protective equipment, having them pre-stage their RIT tools and equipment on a tarp in their own designated area, requiring them to continuously monitor interior operations, and placing them near Command.
Our commitment as a fire department is to save life and property. If we as firefighters are trapped or hurt, no one is coming to save us, the R.I.T. team is our only hope. No one is coming for us but us. R.I.T. members must be proficient and good at what they do. The RIT brings their own tools except ladders and hose line. We attempt to speed up the deployment time by equipping them with thermal imaging cameras, requiring team deployment of a search line, and training them in specialized rescue and removal techniques utilizing minimal equipment. We have figured out that fire fighter rescue is a time-sensitive operation and the faster we can locate and remove the downed fire fighter, the better his or her chances of survival.
In most instances, the CFD RIT team will not be used on its own fire calls. It is established that the RIT Team will come in its own vehicle from a different department with their own equipment. RIT is requested by the fire dept. whose fire that it is. Once on scene the RIT team will deploy their tools as fast as possible just in case there is a MAYDAY call as soon as they arrive. The RIT team is ONLY at that fire scene to work under the Rapid Intervention Team, they do not help pull hose, or get something for another firefighter. All they do on scene is stand with their gear on and ready to go, by their tool tarp in their designated area.
When there is a call for the R.I.T. team, a minimum of four, up to six personnel will respond with rescue 408. ALL members on the truck must be qualified to be on the R.I.T. team. Remember to take the thermal imaging camera off 406. If less than four people show up at the station to respond that are qualified members of the R.I.T. team, contact the requesting fire department and inform them we will not be responding due to lack of qualified personnel. DO NOT send the truck with unqualified people.
